Expanded Metal

Expanded metal is formed by slitting and then stretching a sheet of metal so that it creates a diamond-shaped pattern within the sheet. Expanded metal has become quite popular due to its ability to retain its shape for many years – the diamond-shaped pattern gives the sheet added strength. In addition to being durable, you never have to worry about expanded metal unraveling because it is formed from a solid sheet of metal.

Another unique quality to note about expanded metal is that the diamond-shaped openings allow light, air and liquids to flow through – yet still serving as a form of protection. Because expanded metal is such a dependable material, it is used in a variety of applications to include:

  • Fencing
  • Fire Excapes
  • Grating
  • Flooring
  • Window Guards
  • Walkways
  • Screening
  • Gaskets

Here at Texas Alloys, we offer expanded metal in both standard and flattened styles, which are available in stainless steel, aluminum or carbon steel. Contact us today for any questions regarding our expanded metal supply.

Standard Expanded Metal

Standard expanded metal, abbreviated XM, is the finished metal product right off of the machine. Standard expanded metal is distinct in that its strands and bonds are at an angle compared to the original plane of sheet metal. Because the strands and bonds are at an angle, standard expanded metal is also referred to as “raised” expanded metal. These angles not only allow for air circulation, but also give the sheet added strength and rigidity – making the surface skid resistant. We offer standard expanded metal in stainless steel, aluminum and carbon steel. Please see below for the standard expanded metal size chart.

Flattened Expanded Metal

Flattened expanded metal (abbreviated FXM), differs from standard expanded metal in that it has been cold rolled – so that the final product has a smooth and flat surface. It is basically standard expanded metal that has been processed through a cold roll reducing mill to flatten the surface. The flattening process of the metal reduces the thickness of the sheet and lengthens the diamond-shaped pattern. Because of its reduced thickness, flattened expanded metal is considered about 5% lighter than standard expanded metal. Like standard expanded metal, flattened expanded metal has low resistance to winds is extremely durable and versatile. We offer flattened expanded metal in stainless steel, aluminum and carbon steel. Please see below for the flattened expanded metal size chart.
