Grades of Stainless Steel Round Bar
Stainless round bar, sometimes called stainless steel rod, is a solid, cylindrical bar with uniform dimensions throughout its length. Round bar is easy to turn, drill, or mill in a machine shop, and common finished products include shafts, fasteners, and structural components.
Austenitic 304 stainless steel contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel with small amounts of carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorous, sulfur, and nitrogen. It is the most general-purpose alloy of all stainless steels due to its balance of strength, corrosion tolerance, machinability, and weldability.
Texas Alloys offers stainless steel rod in the following grades:
- 304 / 304L
- 316 / 316L
- 303
- 17-4 / 630
- 416
- 440

Benefits Of Stainless Steel Rod
Round bar distributes stress evenly around its circumference, giving it uniform strength for load-bearing uses. Its benefits also include:
- Corrosion resistant: Stainless steel offers good corrosion resistance to acids, alkalis, and chlorides found in chemical processing and coastal applications.
- Easily formable: Stainless steel round bar tolerates cold working, hot working, and machining without sacrificing its mechanical properties.
- Aesthetically appealing: The smooth, shiny appearance of stainless steel makes it an attractive choice for decorative and aesthetic applications.
- Cost-effective: Stainless steel grades such as 304 have good performance compared to higher grades of stainless steel at a more affordable price.
- Nonmagnetic: Annealed 304 stainless steel is nonmagnetic and useful for applications like MRI machines and electronic devices.
While 304 round bar can withstand a variety of difficult conditions, it may not perform as well in extreme environments as other grades such as 316.
Industries and Applications for Stainless Round Bar
The advantage of stainless steel round bar lies in its suitability for a wide variety of industry applications, such as:
- Architecture: Used for its strength and aesthetic properties for bracing, brackets, shelving, sculptures, and exposed structural elements
- Food and beverage: Used for its nonreactivity and hygienic characteristics for shelving, racks, conveyor systems, and food preparation surfaces
- Aerospace: Used for its high strength-to-weight ratio for support brackets, shafts, seat frames, and spacecraft antennas and housings
- Chemical processing: Used for its superior corrosion resistance for piping, tubing, fittings, and reaction vessel agitator shafts and baffles
Round bar is also common in medical tools and devices, automotive suspension systems, and oil and gas control systems and instrumentation.
